  • Thanks, this is a little difficult to parse while I’m looking at my seeds uploading at ratios well over 1.00 but just the same I’m running a new VPN tunnel with port forwarding enabled to see what difference it makes.

Plex works for the people I share with outside my network. No port forwarding. I just don’t get what I am not getting, and every explainer I get is basically what you posted (no offense) and it doesn’t match what my experience is showing me.

  • You keep posting this and I haven’t been using port forwarding at all but torrents keep coming through. What am I missing here? Serious question, because I do not know what I’m either doing wrong or missing out on with port forwarding and I have not been experiencing what I would call a degraded experience as far as I can tell, but there’s a whole world of things that I’m entirely ignorant to.

  • I think for younger people, this is probably feeling like a betrayal. Almost like, “The boss said smoking was OK as long as we stayed in the smoking area and didn’t litter our butts everywhere, but then they just up and fired everyone that took smoke breaks the other day.”

“Don’t smoke at work” is an easy thing to say, and most people adhere to that in general. But it’s still fucked up to fire the smokers, when company policy just literal days before was “it’s fine, just follow these basic rules.”

Older people grew up keeping their private life private a lot more than younger people today, who have grown up online having their data mined constantly. Just by the nature of having grown up without ubiquitous data harvesting devices feeding analytics companies, we had more privacy as a default condition.

These particular folks were told they had a safe space for the chats they had, and then the rug was pulled from under them.

  • It’s as if with each passing day, Proton wakes up and chooses to wear a slightly different red flag for a cape than the one they wore yesterday. I’m obviously being hyperbolic here, but I’m also a bit upset with myself for having decided to get an annual subscription with them last November.

I’ve heard good things about Mullvad for VPN and Tuta for mail. I’ve got my own domain that I can start using with whatever mail host I land on.

I’m in the U.S. What other mail providers are people using, and what other VPN providers should I be considering?

  • Propublica just continues to put out great journalism. It seems crazy, but there is a part of this article that is basically a side note and simultaneously is also illuminating about another issue on the public mind recently:

But there was also an Ohio OB-GYN on the national board of directors — he used to work for the Cleveland Clinic, I discovered, and now led a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group. The doctor was joined at board meetings by a city prosecutor in Utah, an ex-city council member and, Williams was later told, a sergeant with an Illinois sheriff’s department. (The doctor did not respond to requests for comment. He has since left his post with the UnitedHealth subsidiary, a spokesperson for the company said.)

This is the calibre of doctors that UHC apparently relies on to inform them how to best “enhance profits” by denying “unnecessary care”, and it’s not remotely surprising at this point.
