If it’s about problem solving and using logic, why do we need to memorize quicksort? That’s not an example of using logic or problem solving

I guess what I want is visual studio, but with the language and plugin support of vscode.
shortrounddev@lemmy.worldOPto Programming@programming.dev•Better VSCode customizations?English1·20 days agoMaybe “blocky” isn’t the right word, but I dislike that everything is just a flat rectangle and not very readable. There’s no depth and very poor visual separation. I would like a document type UI where I can rearrange the components arbitrarily, like in Visual Studio
Maybe being alone works for some people, but the desire for intimate relationships is a biological drive in human beings
It’s an internet thing. There’s a lot of people online who code but have no jobs. 4chan’s /dpt/ is full of them. They all code in ANSI C or Lisp or something
It’s a problem to have so many single, disaffected men out there
shortrounddev@lemmy.worldto Programming@programming.dev•Graduating highschool and wanting to work as a programmer, advice?English131·1 month agoOnly way to get hired with your credentials is with some serious networking. In your local area, look for code/tech meetups and talk with people. Look for “Code and Coffee” on meetup or facebook or something (though I must warn against caffeine consumption for teenagers!). You’ll most likely have to look for an internship rather than a Junior Dev position at first, which is typically the pipeline that companies use to hire Jr Engineers.
Another option is to look for “Tier 3 support” or “Integrations engineers”. Often, companies will look for people with minor coding skills to work directly with clients to help implement the company product for the client (for example, adding some custom widget to their wordpress site, new features for their salesforce instance, etc.)
These engineers don’t create the company product but they do get some experience scripting things and often they can use this position to transition to a full time engineering role. In my experience, these roles have far lower requirements to entry
I curse the sadist who decided True should be uppercase in Python
Yes? And the sweater the OP wore was an anime sweater

The benefit of having to pay for software is that their revenue stream comes directly from me and not from a 3rd party. It’s not about supporting the developer for me, it’s about knowing that the product I pay for is the product I get

I’m just saying the maintainability and quality of the code and speed of iteration is more of the point than how impressive the math is behind an ML algorithm. I’ve just seen a lot of ML engineers/data scientists who really suck at writing maintainable code

shortrounddev@lemmy.worldto Programming@programming.dev•'I Recreated Shazam's Algorithm from Scratch because no one is hiring jnr devs' - ChigozirimEnglish5·2 months agoI honestly don’t think that doing these cool things improves your odds of getting hired. Junior Devs don’t really touch these parts of a platform, let alone lead development on them from scratch.
A valuable engineer, to me, is someone who writes clean, maintainable code and follows common patterns. That’s also something which has to be learned by trial and error to actually see the value of.

I mean the only real reason to upgrade a monitor is for new features, not because it has incrementally improved on the features it already offered, or size maybe. What would be the basis for calling something a “porkchop” vs a “lizard milkshake”
I guess you could have like 3 tiers of features, going from Cheapest to most Expensive (i.e, lower end is 60hz, higher end 120+hz) and then each generation you know which monitor is “better”

“how to problem solve” and “use logic” are, I believe, myths. When you teach someone to implement quicksort, all you’ve done is taught them to implement quicksort. Classroom based lectures and rote memorization do not impart any kind of broader “problem-solving” ability. This is an ex post rationalization by the perpetrators of the education system to justify their own existence. I place the value of what they do very low
