none of these people had a job in manufacturing, or even possibly any real job, it’s called CNC and there are way better tools for making it work than stochastic parrot
e: ok at least op is a machinist
Interestingly, many of these models also score at or above the level of some human experts on visual reasoning benchmarks like MMMU. That which is easy to measure often doesn’t correlate with real world usefulness.
benchmarks could be perhaps possibly fucked with? say it aint so!
My high level impression when reading the response is “someone who can parrot textbook knowledge but doesn’t know what they’re talking about”.
with corpus consisting of toy problems only, and with solutions that depending on field can kill whoever uses these
fullsquare@awful.systemsto TechTakes@awful.systems•Stubsack: weekly thread for sneers not worth an entire post, week ending 20th April 2025English10·8 days agoIf OpenAI’s funding round with Softbank goes as planned, it’ll raise the equivalent of the entire GDP of Estonia — a fairly wealthy country itself, and one that’s also a member of Nato and the European Union. That alone should give you a sense of the truly insane scale of this.
so not only saltman is capable of burning enough power to be comparable to middle-sized euro country, he can also burn small euro country gdp
they are not serious people. damn if i only started grifting instead of getting socially useful skillset

fullsquare@awful.systemsto TechTakes@awful.systems•Stubsack: weekly thread for sneers not worth an entire post, week ending 13th April 2025English3·14 days agowait, what do you mean “integrating it into workflows”. this juicero of outsourcing won’t work as advertised and it’s probably cheaper and less prone to fucking up to hire a couple of southeastern asians or eastern europeans. as long as business is selling of these juiceros, they’ll be fine as long as they can find suckers. these suckers, tho, might be in trouble even before openai goes under for unrelated reasons

some things perun notes that i hadn’t because i haven’t followed the entire situation closely: that trade deficit calculation uses goods only, not services, and this is most of what sv exports; eu might retaliate against sv oligarchs specifically. also we’re in times where it’s necessary to pull up american govt pages from internet archive to make a point. fun. also chatbot-cooked policy looks suspiciously like chatbot solution to a entry level econ course toy problem with loads of very unusual assumptions, which are discussed too.
maybe stable genius tries to bring american wages closer to global average
fullsquare@awful.systemsto TechTakes@awful.systems•AGI Escapes Containment; Trump Admin: "Hold My Beer" — Tariff TerathreadEnglish3·16 days agoit must be comforting to think that there’s some bigger plan, and they can’t possibly be this stupid and incompetent
(by now i do think that they’re this stupid and incompetent, and if it appears that there’s no plan going forward it is because there was never one. they’re malicious, see Zelensky visit, and can plan perhaps a week in advance, but nowhere near sophisticated enough to come up with this)
why would they release another money-losing nonsense generator while new
