For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, first up is The Beast (2023), a dystopian French sci-fi set in a future in which the state seeks to suppress all emotions. A woman (Lea Seydoux) uses a machine that puts her into a deep sleep, allowing her to live past lives while also ridding her of strong feelings. Uh-oh, she meets a guy when she’s using the device, and feels uncannily drawn to him. Will romance blossom, or is this all an illusion? Guess we’ll find out. This is arguably the most popular film to date of director Bertrand Bonello, who is otherwise best-known for the brothel drama House of Tolerance (2011), which we have not yet watched.

After that is Bad Lieutenant (1992), the tale of a corrupt cop (Harvey Keitel), addicted to drugs and gambling, who attempts to tone for his violent, hedonistic lifestyle by investigating the r*pe of a local nun. He completely fails at this and just proves even more that he’s a hopelessly amoral asshole. How will this all end up? I guess we’ll find out. Director is Abel Ferrara, who has made several hardboiled crime movies; this is generally considered his best work, and one of the best crime thrillers of the 90s.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:
