For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Miracle in Cell No. 7 (2013), a Korean comedy-drama about a mentally-challenged man imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, and his efforts to maintain his relationship with his six-year-old daughter. Both humor and tearjerking ensue as he befriends his fellow inmates and they scheme to let him see his child. This is by far the best-known and best-regarded work to date of director Lee Hwan-kyung; he is, thus far, a one-hit wonder. Great reviews for this, so let’s give it a whirl.

After that is Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974), a classic crime-thriller. A rich Mexican man puts out a bounty of $1 million on the head of the eponymous Garcia, attracting the attention of a pianist whose prostitute girlfriend just so happens to know where he is. They set off to find him and make some money, and get in over their heads in the Mexican underworld. Surprisingly, this will be the first film we have watched from renowned New Hollywood auteur Sam Peckinpah, who is best-known for The Wild Bunch (1969) and Straw Dogs (1971). This is considered one of his best, so let’s check it out.
