For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is The Lovers on the Bridge (1991), a poverty-themed French romance from renowned auteur Leos Carax, whose surreal anthology Holy Motors (2012) we previously watched. This film centers on a pair of vagrants in Paris, one addicted to drugs, and the other going blind, who find themselves in a surprisingly heartwarming love story when they meet and start forming a connection. Hope this goes for them. This is one of the highest-rated French films on Letterboxd, so let’s give it a whirl.

Next up is Charley Varrick (1973), a beist thriller starring Walter Matthau as a bank robber whose latest score is unexpectedly large. Uh-oh, turns out it belongs to the mob, and now a bunch of hired goons are on his tail, along with the cops. Gunfights and car chases follow from there. Director is Don Siegel, who specialized in gritty thrillers like this, such as Dirty Harry (1971) and Escape from Alcatraz (1979). Surprisingly, this will be the first film of his that we have watched. Great reviews for this.
